Pele sues Samsung for $30m over lookalike use in ad

Image
Pele ( Edson Arantes do Nascimento) Brazilian football legend Pele is suing South Korean electronics giant Samsung, after claiming the firm improperly used a lookalike in an advertisement. He is claiming at least $30m (£21m), according to legal papers lodged at the US District Court in Chicago. The advertisement for ultra high-definition televisions ran in the New York Times without Pele's permission. Pele, 75, whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is considered by many to be the best player of all time. He played for Brazil's victorious World Cup winning teams of 1958 and 1970, scoring in both finals, and was in the squad which won in 1962. With club side Santos he twice won the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup. Later in his career he went on to become the face of "soccer" in the US, as the NASL looked for a sporting breakthrough in the mid-1970s.  Scissors kick It is alleged that Samsung ran the advertisement after b...

34 years in Coma; Jean-Pierre Adams touching Story

Image
Today, Thursday marks 34 years to the day since former France international Jean-Pierre Adams entered into a coma following a botched operation on his knee. Having turned 68 earlier this month, the ex-footballer has now spent half of his life in this condition -- with his wife Bernadette still lovingly tending to him. It is fair to say that Jean-Pierre's story touched a nerve. Perhaps it's hardly surprising given the emotion that courses through his tale. On one hand, there is sympathy for the way his life was cruelly and needlessly turned upside down. On the other, there's the way his wife Bernadette has unfailingly stuck by his side through the years. Despite having no medical training prior to his accident on March 17, 1982, she has cared for the man she married in 1969 in the family home ever since. Once a strapping physical specimen, Jean-Pierre now spends most of his day in bed -- incapable of nearly all voluntary movement, although he can diges...

Sunday Oliseh resigns as Super Eagles coach

Image
The former Nigerian International announced his decision to end his increasingly controversial tenure on Twitter early this morning. He attributed the decision to lack of support and contract violations by the Nigerian Football Federation. The 41-year-old, who was appointed as the Super Eagles Head Coach in July 2015, has had a tough time leading the National team with a poor run of results recently. He had recently had to apologise to the NFF and Nigerians after posting a video in which he attacked his critics. Earlier in his tenure he had fallen out with former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, leading to the latter’s decision to quit the team. Oliseh noted that he was, however, grateful for the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles.

NFF orders Oliseh to Abuja

Image
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have ordered Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh to appear before their technical committee on Friday in Abuja to defend his call-ups for next month’s crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt. A top official informed Mtnfootball.com that Oliseh will on Friday, February 26, also be expected to discuss his game plan for the double header against the seven-time African champions. Nigeria will welcome group leaders Egypt to Kaduna on Friday, March 25, before a reverse fixture in Egypt two days later.Oliseh had planned to travel around Europe to monitor the country’s top stars ahead of the showdown against Egypt, but this has been truncated as he has yet to receive any approvals for his spying mission. The Eagles training camp for the AFCON qualifiers is expected to open with players from the domestic league two weeks to the home game in Kaduna. Meanwhile, ailing Eagles coach Jean Francois Lusciuto has begged to be paid at least part of what the...

Afghan 'Plastic Bag Boy' Excited About Meeting Messi

Image
On Monday, the Afghan Football Federation (AFF) confirmed that Ahmadi will now get a chance to meet his football hero. "We've been contacted by Messi's management team and they have expressed their interest in meeting the boy," AFF spokesman, Syed Ali Kazemi, told Al Jazeera. "We are doing our best to coordinate their meeting. The date and the venue is still not confirmed yet, but there are chances of Ahmadi flying to Spain to meet his idol (Messi)." Kazemi added that "the passion that Murtaza carries for football, we will do everything in our capacity to train him to be a part of our Afghanistan football team". Murtaza's brother Homayoun was the one who made the improvised shirt - that perfectly fit the little boy - and scribbled Messi's name and the No 10 in it. Jose Mourinho to Manchester United: Portuguese 'convinced' he has Old Trafford job

Image
Jose Mourinho has been described as ‘convinced’ he will replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United in the latest round of reports linking the Portuguese with Old Trafford. The Independent on Sunday revealed that Mourinho, who left Chelsea in December, was ‘confident’ of becoming the new manager at United but the Daily Mirror and Daily Telegraph have gone one step further this morning, claiming the 53-year-old has told friends he will take over. The Red Devils have refused to deny reports they have held discussions with Mourinho as Van Gaal’s tenure fizzles out into failure. No deal has been struck between the pair and United reportedly remain tentatively interested in Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. It’s a done deal. Chelsea is the only big job up for grabs.” United have been forced to act after Manchester City attracted Pep Guardiola to take over from Manuel Pellegrini at the end of the season. Mourinho and Guardiola shared a fierce rivalry during their time in Sp...

Afuze: The unknown Olympic Games Village

Image
Once the pride of the nation, the world-class Afuze Olympic Games Village, built in 1974, has virtually turned to home of reptiles and rodents, as the facilities have been abandoned and overgrown with weeds for over two decades. It was a harsh and chilly Harmattan evening, when our correspondent arrived at Afuze, the headquarters of Owan East Local Government Area in Edo State, on January 26. Unknown Olympic Games Village I beckoned on a commercial motorcyclist to take me to the Olympic Games Village in the quiet town. But to my dismay, none among the horde of motorcyclists knew the place. “Where is that in Afuze? There is nowhere like that here,” one of them said. Some of the residents I also enquired about the place from didn’t know about it. It was appalling that nobody in the community knew about the Olympics Games Village, built by the former Governor of the defunct Midwestern Region Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia (retd.) in Afuze on a surveyed land measuring...

US:House Whip resigns amid allegations about text message

Image
NASHVILLE — House Majority Whip Jeremy Durham at 6:17 p.m. CT sent The Tennessean a formal statement that he is resigning from his leadership position in the Tennessee House Republican caucus. The statement comes after a two-hour whirlwind in which GOP leadership released a statement from Durham saying he resigned, only to have Durham waffle on his resignation in several emails to The Tennessean. The updated statement added one paragraph, but was largely the same as the original statement. After the caucus sent a statement to The Tennessean at 4:27 p.m. from Durham purportedly announcing his resignation, Durham told The Tennessean in an email at 4:48 p.m. he hadn’t made up his mind yet. “I'm talking it over with my family but have not made a decision. Nothing should've gone out,” Durham said in an email to The Tennessean. “Watching Broncos game at the moment.” Durham’s denial email came three minutes after House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick said he had accepted...

CONFLICT LOOM IN SOUTH SUDAN

Image
CONFLICT LASSEMBLED OVERNMENT TROOPS ASSEMBLED: Conflict looms in the two conflict areas of South Kordofan and Blue Nile states as the Sudanese government amasses troops along the borders of rebel-controlled areas. Local sources suspect the conflict will commence within two weeks once government forces, made up of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and other militias, reposition themselves. An estimated 230,000 citizens in the SPLM-N-controlled area in the Nuba MountaIns are now at risk of attack and displacement as the fighting season commences. The fighting season generally starts in full force in December or January after the rainy season ends, making roads accessible. According to eyewitnesses, mass government troop movements are repositioning themselves south of South Kordofan’s capital, Kadugli, to areas near the Sudan and South Sudan border. Other government forces are moving from Rashad County to Abu Jubaiha in South Kordofan in what may be a two-pronged attack on the reb...

During the court proceedings it was revealed that Seekoei also has a pending rape case which will resume next month.   It was also revealed that Seekoei tied the victim with an electric wire and beat her with a belt on three different times of that day.
